Product Description
Evergreen is a tree-growing strategy game for 1-4 players where your goal is to build a lush ecosystem by planting sprouts, growing trees, and placing other natural elements on your planet, trying to make it the greenest and most fertile of all. You choose biome cards from a common pool to determine which area of your planet you'll develop in a round. The cards not chosen make those regions more fertile, and thus more valuable. To create a huge forest, you want to grow trees, plant bushes, and place lakes, while using the power of nature to gain extra actions. Ideally you can concentrate your trees in the most fertile areas, but without them overshadowing one another as you also want them to collect as much light as possible. Components: 4 Planet boards, 36 Cylinder markers, 200 Wooden tokens, 1 First Player token, 4 Sun markers, 42 Biome cards. For Ages 8+. 1-4 Players. 45-60 Minutes.
From the manufacturer

Evergreen is a tree-growing abstract strategy game for 1-4 players by Hjalmar Hach, designer of the award-winning game Photosynthesis, where your goal is to build a lush ecosystem, planting seeds, growing trees, and placing other natural elements on your planet, trying to make it the greenest and most fertile of all.
1. Pick a Biome card from a common pool to determine the area of your Planet you’re going to develop each round.
2. Grow your Trees, plant Bushes, and place Lakes to create a huge Forest, and use the power of Nature to gain extra Actions!
3. Concentrate your Trees in the most Fertile areas and let them collect Light without overshadowing each other to score points!

Craft your own strategy! Pick cards from the drafting pool for the Biome they allow you to develop, or for the Power they activate. But that’s not all! Even the cards you do NOT choose are just as important, since the least chosen biomes become more Fertile, and thus more valuable!
Try to keep your Trees close to each other to score points for your biggest Forest… but you also want them to collect as much Light as possible without shading each other, so be mindful of the position of the sun!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2023Style: Base GameVerified PurchaseMy partner and I play this and it's always "one more game" as we hope we'll get just the right combination or configuration to get our new high score. I play this game solo as well - and those rules are easy as well. A good investment and I hope they'll make an expansion so that maybe we can play beyond four seasons into a second year... or a mirror game that mimics the actual configuration of a planet with the biomes split and layered towards the equator.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2023Style: Base GameVerified PurchaseI haven't played yet, but it looks great. If you have played photosynthesis which is a great game, I hear this one is even better and it is rated above on boardgamegeek
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2023From the same designer of Photosynthesis, a favorite with my family, comes Evergreen, sporting a similar mechanic in a non-take that fashion. Whew!
Photosynthesis is a very fun game of growing a forest of trees. In doing so you can cause other player significant grief by blocking the sunlight from their growing trees. In Evergreen you play your trees on your own board and block no one but yourself.
Your individual player board (all 4 are identical) has 6 different "biome" areas in which you'll plant seedlings, hopefully growing them to trees, and place bushes to help expand your forest and lakes to help trees grow. The biome in which you grow trees is determined by the card you draft in the drafting round. In this round, you'll select, in player order, the biome card for the area you wish to take actions as well as the special power of the selected card.
You must place your seedlings and select which to grow larger depending on the direction the sun is shining in the current turn. That direction changes 4 times during the game and points are scored based on tree growth and how the sun strikes the tree. You get 2 actions per turn. Once based on the selected card and one based on the special power of the selected card. Actions are simple: Plant 3 seedlings - Grow 2 trees (either from a seedling or make one larger), plant a seedling and grow a tree, ignore the biome card to plant a seedling *or* grow a tree anywhere on the board.
I played with a 12yo and solo. The games with the 12yo went quite well once she caught on to the play and how actions effect your board and she caught on by the 3rd or so turn (you have 10 turns total in a game). Once we got a handle on game play a game took us around 25 or so minutes to complete.
Solo plays smoothly and quite quickly - in 15 to 20 minutes or so and possibly faster once you really get a handle on player actions. A "dummy" player simply takes a card from the available biomes based on a few simple selection rules.
The components are top notch and all eco friendly. All player pieces are wooden, the insert is stiff paperboard, and the player boards are dual layer cardboard. Those dual layer boards do a decent job of keeping all the bits in place but *can* be a bit fiddly as it's easy to accidentally knock over a tree causing a domino effect. Colors are muted pastels and work quite well for the game. Player boards and cards have attractive artwork with the cards showing the proper area of the board, which has icons in slots matching the associated biome card.
The insert is very well designed with a spot for each component type. The player boards sit on top of the insert with the instruction booklet on top of the boards. These completely fill the box and prevent the bits from moving around when the game is stored vertically - a very nice touch. And the box is only 2 inches deep - half the depth of most game boxes these days. That's quite appreciated.
Overall, this is a fun and fairly easy game to learn and play. It will see regular table time at my house.
I give it a 7/10 (Amazon's 4/5 since you can't do half stars) for fun, design, ease, and quickness of play.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2023Style: Base GameVerified PurchaseDouble layered boards are nice, pieces are on the small side and can be fidgety but that's the only downside. Besides that, this came scales well, no run away winners, its just an outstanding beautiful game. Easy teach as well.

The game has 4 rounds like the seasons. During each season, on your turn, you will choose from a selection of shared face-up cards. Each card will show you the region you may grow in and give you a bonus power to use anywhere on your board. You will choose from 5 options to grow and use your bonus power denoted by the symbol on the bottom of the card. You can increase a bonus power by drawing the same power over and over. Consider carefully when drafting - Do you want to hinder the progress of other players by drafting a card you know would be useful to them? Or forge ahead progressing your forest. Another strategy to consider is the undrafted card left goes to the pile used for end-game scoring.
At the end of a season, you will score the round based on how many trees receive sunlight based on the position of the sun. Any trees in a shadow do not count. You will also score points based on your largest grouping of trees and bushes that touch orthogonally.
Very think puzzle that could suffer from AP as you evolve your forest accounting for the shifting sun to minimize shadows covering your trees while considering the biome that looks to receive the most bonus points and connecting trees and bushes together for your large forest score. Phew!
