Product Description

The 7th Continent
The 7th Continent

The 7th Continent

1907 - You have just returned from the first expedition to the 7th continent, a mysterious land that was recently discovered off the coast of Antarctica and probably the very last terra incognita in the world.

You are recovering from your adventure when, whilst reading the day’s newspaper, you realise that several other members of the expedition have disappeared suddenly.

At nightfall, you fall into a restless sleep without knowing that, for you, another adventure is about to begin...

The 7th Continent – English Version

Explore. Survive. YOU are the Hero!

The 7th Continent is an exploration and survival game for 1 to 4 players, inspired by choose YOUR own path adventure books . You play the role of an early 20th century explorer returning from an expedition to the newly discovered 7th Continent, a mysterious and hostile land spied upon by Jules Verne and H.P. Lovecraft.

  • A game designed to be played solo or up to 4 players cooperatively
  • Rediscover the sensations of the adventure "game books" of your childhood
  • Nearly 850 cards for the core box alone
  • 30 seconds to set up the game... 30 seconds to save the game
  • Experience a different adventure every time you play
  • The game remembers your choices!
The 7th Continent

The 7th Continent

Explore the continent

Just like the chapters that make up the “choose your own path” game books, you will explore the seventh continent by playing numbered Adventure cards that will gradually form the board.

Forest, desert, dungeon, sea: the dozens of terrains that punctuate your adventure expose you to various random events, always consistent with your location.

The 7th Continent

Dozens of random events

The innovative numbered card system makes each part unique. The game remembers your choices and every action can have lasting consequences! Save the life of a stranger you meet along the way, and it could help you survive later. If you choose to ignore him or her, you will lose the opportunity to benefit from his or her help for the rest of your adventure.

The 7th Continent

Take advantage of the environment

To survive the many threats on the continent, you'll need to make items, hunt or fish for food, spend your experience points to learn new advanced skills, and more.

As you explore, you'll also need to observe your environment - it contains many hidden clues and numbers - and learn how to use the effects of the strange plants that grow on the continent.

Damaged cards and player help board
UPDATED! Received replacement cards.Lots of damaged cards. There is also a large section of cards that are all bent on the left-hand side going from top to bottom. Even the cards I received that are currently in good condition I question the longevity of them as the card stock and quality feel like it could have been much better.Contacted the company and they responded with a form to fill out. I will update my review score after seeing how good they are about replacing these cards. The game itself is entertaining. It plays out like a more complex "choose your own adventure" where you pick your actions and see the results to learn from and not make those same mistakes again. Although I died going into a much different direction on the map, it was really fun feeling like I was exploring a more "secret" part of the map that not all players may get to due to failed checks. Every move to another section of the map is costly, every check, every action, take away from the player's or group's life. Making choices about how to explore while balancing the action deck/life force was very interesting and made every choice more meaningful and calculated. There are only three curses which I question the replayability after they have been completed. Sure, there are add-on packs one can purchase for more curses (which I have canceled due to the condition the original game was shipped in), I fail to see the replayability after finishing curses and knowing where to go. Not sure I even want to spend more money on this game given my current situation with damaged cards and the quality of the cards in general. The rule book is pretty bad and requires frequent checks on rules. The layout for rules may be the most logical they could come up with, but it still feels as if it is not in a very logical order. Even the "Watch it Played" video with Rodney Smith is also confusing regarding this particular game (his other videos are much better, making me think he was stuck with the same format as the book due to Serious Poulp sponsoring the video). Some things are simplified as to how players complete all of the checks so one doesn't have to keep checking how combat goes or how to search a section of a map, but there are so many things regarding cards that are not laid out in sequential order or explained well at all. Good luck with this.Overall, the game itself I think is very fun and will be really enjoyed completing each curse, but once that is done, I am not sure the game will get much play after that. While there are plenty games that have rules issues, this one could have done a much better job I think. Of course, the biggest complaint I have is in the pictures above and in general with the quality of the cards themselves.UPDATE: After submitting several pictures of the cards and details about the damage, I have been notified that replacements are in the mail. Once they get here, I will update.UPDATE 2: Cards received seven days after being notified of shipping. Was sent in a yellow bubble-wrapped envelope. Disappointing that the player action card was creased in several areas most likely due to shipping in the chosen package format, but the cards I received are all in great condition. This was one of their statements regarding the issue in correspondence I had with them: "It's odd that many cards are damaged, but it may happen on a pack of cards due to a production issue, in this case we'll replace them of course."They certainly did. I assume this was an anomaly, not a common problem. But, with some work on my end, they took care of the problem. It took a few weeks from the time I reported the issue immediately discovering the issues (about an hour after delivery), they did take care of me and send me replacements. I have upped my rating from 1 to 4 stars due in part to the customer service I was given as well as my previous statements about this game.

Had been looking for something that I can play in a sort of "videogame" style or "dm-less" RPG. This very much fits the bill. The closest match I can say is that it is very much like an old "point and click" game with some survival elements added in. Also for the purpose of this review I have only played as a Solo experience, which is honestly how I would recommend playing at least at first. Drop in/Drop out of other players is quite doable if you see your time being mixed.

    RULES:
The basic mechanics are fairly easy to learn. exploration is through revealing cards as directed based on your actions and if those actions succeed or fail. Those pass/fail conditions are based on drawing cards from an action deck (which doubles as your "energy" pool). then adding up the number of stars to see if you beat the required number. This uses an element of "push your luck" as drawing more cards gives higher chance of success while lower your overall "energy" to continue without finding a way to replenish the deck.

    GAMEPLAY:
The strategy is where the difficulty ramps up. trying to decide how much you are willing to risk, when to fix problem states (injury, etc), and how far to explore before eating/hunting. These things will make or break your journey through the 7th continent. And occasionally that journey does end in your character(s) dying, which has you resetting the game to the starting state. This creates a "rouge-like" element, and I recommend taking notes so that you can remember key things from game to game. in between sessions there is a simple and elegant system to "save" your progress using specially marked cards. The game can be torn down in less than a minute using this feature and set back up in slightly more. the longer bit of setup is sorting out cards that were sent to "the past" section in your previous session and returning them to their places in the trays. I actually tend to do this when I pack up so that start up time is super quick next time.

    QUALITY:
As for components and overall quality. The cards are made from good stock with a smooth finish. All of the cards are the same square cards so specialty sleeves (80mm x 80mm) will be needed. The publisher only recommends sleeving the action and other commonly used cards (around 100 cards). the punch out character standees are functional if a touch on the small side. Dice included are also small, but are the right size for what they are used for (durability counters for items not rolling). Box itself is also a good quality and sturdy. Shelf storage might be a bit awkward as the cards might slide around if placed on its side, but honestly it hasnt been on my shelf since I got it.

    VALUE:
You definitely get a lot of game for your buck here. the game contains three different curses that can be played in any order or with multiple (or even all) at the same time. Each will take you several hours of play to work through. There are several expansions at a fairly decent price. I have not purchased any as of yet, but plan to do so once I get some more time in.

The game was very well made and was a fantastic experience. I personally did not finish the game. The theme is dark and the game is very punishing. It seems the more you play, the worse off you are, and given the everything in life happening since March 2020 onwards... we stopped taking the time to set up the game because while fun, there was very little 'feel good' successes. Play felt very... one of two possibilities:
Succeed without yet another setback, but not any better than before...continue as is.
Or you are worsened. The game is less joy, harder, and there is no light at the end of the tunnel feeling. I cannot explain more without spoilers.

TLDR A great, fun, and well designed game... that I stopped after 12 scenarios and likely will never play again. Still worth 5 stars as the game is great. My experience with it wasn't.

This is an immersive game, where randomness is present, similar to real life, you make decisions and these have consequences. One of the hardest decisions for me is how many adventure cards to use to succeed, sometimes it's better to lose than spend these cards that represent your life.

One of my favorite mechanics is crafting and combining items. It allows you to hold more items and also create combos to improve your abilities.
Every time you get an experience card, it gives you tips to improve your knowledge about the game.

You are running against time or life represented by the amount of life you have. I love this game.
