A Fantastic Game with a Unique Neutral Faction Mechanic- Nothing Else Like it Out There!
Cool Mini or Not's Richard the Lionheart is a board game for two to six players in which factions compete with each other to gain advantage even as one player struggles to get the most victory points. The game is set in the world of medieval England, where King Richard has gone off to the Crusade and Robin Hood battles the evil Prince John for domination of the Kingdom. At the beginning of the game players choose to either join the faction that is trying to help King Richard (Red), or the faction that is trying to maintain Prince John in power (Green). In games with three or five players, the old player is either Austrian, three players, or French, five players (Blue). The game board is a series of towns and villages throughout England. Each town lets you do take a specific action light draw cards, gain victory points, gain money, exchange these things for others, and more. There is also the track board, which consists of four different tracks that each contain ten spaces. The first track is Richard's track, how it is faring against Saladin's army. The second track is Saladin's track, and how it is faring against Richard. The third track is the King's Return track, measuring how Richard is trying to get back to England, and the final track is the King's Treasury, measuring how much money Richard has in his coffers. Over the course of the game, players will try to collect faction cards, which are either in Red or Green, to influence the track up or down. If ever one of the tracks reaches the end, a member of that faction will win the game. The faction cards are available face up (six cards- three for each faction), and a random deck face down that players can draw from as well. Players will also draw an Event card each round which will set up specific conditions for the round, as well as controlling the Merchant and the Mercenary, two NPCs in the game. After each player has moved their character to a new town, players may buy new items to help them on their quest like a horse which will let them move farther between the towns, a ship which will allow them to move through waterways, victory points, cards, and more. Then, each player must contribute two cards (under threat of a victory point penalty) to the Crusader deck. The initial Crusader deck has one of each card in it, but that will change over the course of the game. A number of cards in the Crusader deck are revealed depending on player count, and then the tracks are adjusted accordingly. As all this is playing out, the Blue faction player, if it exists in the game, may decide each turn which faction to support, and may have some control over the cards played at this time. As soon as one of the figures reaches the end of their track, the game is over. Only a member of the faction who's figure made it to the end can win. In that case, whoever of that faction has the most victory points wins. If no figure has reached the end of the track by the end of the 10th game turn the game ends. In that case, whoever has the most victory points is the winner.Richard the Lionheart is a great looking game, which is not surprising because it came from Cool Mini or Not, the company that brought us Zombicide, The Others, Blood Rage, and more. There are a number of plastic figures, brining a real toy box feel to the game. The figures along the four tracks could easily have been tokens, but they boast cool miniatures as well. The artwork and the cards all look really good, and are of a high production quality. The game itself is really a lot of fun. (At this point I should point out that I've only played the five player game). I really love the neutral Blue faction, which is playing both sides throughout the game in order to drag it out and win after the full ten rounds. That player can throw a monkey wrench into a faction's best laid plans. What I think is really cool about this game, however, is that players on a faction look to each other for help in the early game- it feels like a team game. But as the game nears its end, you see that other player as a competitor. You need to get more victory points that him, but that may limit your ability to do other things, and that may cause the other faction to get the upper hand. It's a lot of fun- a team game but only one player can win! I also really like how the Crusader deck functions, somewhat reminiscent of the way you resolve Crises in Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game. Richard the Lionheart is also somewhat similar to Cool Mini or Not's The Godfather: Corleone's Empire, in the way it blends worker placement mechanics and hand management. The production values and aesthetic are also reminiscent of the Godfather as well.I do have some criticisms of Richard the Lionheart, however. The tracks are somewhat confusing. Two of them go from 1 to 10, while the others go from 10 to 1. Some of the actions you can take mention going up or down on the tracks, and it is difficult to remember without looking it up what it means for each track. It would have been simpler if they all went from 1 to 10. Also, it's easy to get the rump Crusader deck mixed up with other facedown faction cards around the board. It would have been nice if there was a dedicated Crusader deck spot somewhere on the board. These are minor complaints, however, if what is generally a very fun game. With Richard the Lionheart, Cool Mini or Not has created yet another outstanding game. The theme is awesome, the production is top notch, and gameplay is a lot of fun. If you've got a game group that is looking for something new, I think you should give this one a try. I don't know of any other game that has a neutral faction mechanic that works quite like this. Of course, that means you'll have to play with only three or five players, but I think it's worth it. In fact, I don't think I'll play with any player count other than five. I'm pretty sure that's the sweet spot. In any event, check this one out for sure! The Discriminating Gamer

I loved the theme and almost hesitated on buying this because the reviews on BGG averaged 6.8 but I don't know who was reviewing this game because it is awesome! Totally underrated. This is a top 5 board game of all time for me. There's a lot going in the game. You have team based objectives and even your teammate can betray you because the winner comes down to points even among the team at the end. Its almost like two games in one. You're racing against time to get stack the deck in your favor for King Richard's return or defeat with other game tracks on his treasury and only 10 rounds total. Any number of tracks will run out of time where you have to count the victory points. Then there's vying for the best towns to visit on the board. You can steal cards from opposing factions and the neutral faction can just mess with everyone and flipping sides. Miniature quality is just absolutely outstanding. Board quality, components, theme and even game storage system is amazing. I love love love this game. Get it!!

I bought this game for the figures. At this price the figures were only a few dollars apiece and beautiful.

I read over the game and watched it played on YouTube. It seems good.

At first it seems like the game would offer more. The miniatures are awesome and most of the game seems well made. Some of the pieces are overly similar the victory coin/points and the cards are very basic looking compared to the other components. It is a good game over all. Scoring in this game is probably the part I like least.

The miniatures that come with this game are great! The game itself takes a bit to learn but once you get it down it is super fun to play. Great for 4 or more people.

In the 12th century, England was ruled by King Richard I, also known as Richard the Lionheart. This was a time of crusaders, and Richard believed it was his duty to lead troops to the Holy Land against the Sultan Saladin. Wars are never that neatly compartmentalized, and while Richard was away his younger brother John Lackland (Prince John), not only sat on the throne in Richard's place, but also tried to seize it from him. Recently, CMON published a game called Richard the Lionheart, which transports players back to the 12 century and asks them to ally with Richard or John, rally support for their chosen leader, and see who is on the throne when the dust settles. Richard the Lionheart is a game for 2 to 6 players, ages 14+. It takes about one hour to play and retails for $70.

      Game Play
Richard the Lionheart is a game of alliances, but ultimately it will only have one winner. If you play with an even number of people, you will divide up into forces for Richard (Robin Hood, Little John, Friar Tuck, and Maid Marion) or forces against him (Prince John, Sheriff of Nottingham, Bishop of Ely, and Isabella). When there are an odd number of players, a neutral party is introduced (Leopold of Austria at three players or Marie of France at five players). (Note: With 4+ players, there will also be some additional NPC merchants and mercenaries to help you.)

The game is played on a map of England, where you and the other players will be traveling through different locations. Each of these locations is color-coded to match support for Richard or John. Therefore, locations that match your affiliation can only be activated by you and will only provide you advantages. While you are traversing England, there will be events to deal with, which give special scoring opportunities or actions that occur. There are also edicts that give you bonus points. Most importantly are the influence cards. This is the meat of the game, because it is these cards that will determine each round how the Crusade is faring. Is Richard winning the battle or is Saladin? Is the King close to returning or still far away? And lastly, is Richard's treasury full or are the coffers almost bare? You may want Richard to win the battle and come back early since you feel you are in the lead, but another Richard supporter might want to slow his return down so that they can be his favored servant and seize the victory! The game will end with either Richard's army winning, Saladin's army winning, Richard returning, Richard's treasury being exhausted or playing ten rounds.

      Positives
      1. Theme - It's nice to see Robin Hood and the Sheriff in a game, where they are not the sole focus of it, merely pawns in the grand stage of things. A lot of people might not like the fact that the Crusades are used as a backdrop, and feel that it sanitizes them by not addressing the atrocities of them, but I think this game mixed history with legends to create a compelling setting.

      2. Art and Miniatures - The art in this game is very reminiscent of the Middle Ages and some of the boards feel like you are looking at a tapestry of sorts. There are also highly detailed miniatures in this game, which is what you come to expect from CMON.

      3. Player Boards and Player Count - Each character in the game provides you a different starting amount of coins and a special ability that other characters don't have. I love asymmetrical player powers, because it makes you alter your strategy each time you play. As for the player count, the game can accommodate between two and six people, and as mentioned above, each count gives you a different setup. This too adds replay value and gives you a unique experience each time you play.

      Neutrals
      1. Components - With the inclusion of miniatures in this game, it makes the game feel deluxe. Unfortunately, the coins and prestige tokens are both made of cardboard and it makes you wish that they had been wood or plastic at least. (We'd all love metal, but metal is expensive.)

      2. Semi-cooperative nature - I am the type of person who either likes a full cooperative experience or a semi-cooperative experience with a hidden traitor. In this game, you're playing with a team to win, but if you don't have the most points on your team, you won't win.

      Negative
      1. Price - The most unfortunate part of this game is the price point. At $70 MSRP, this game prices itself out of a lot of people's budgets, especially families.

      Final Thoughts
Overall, I found this to be an enjoyable game with a theme that I could really sink my teeth into. The game does a nice job of abstracting the Crusades into a manageable format and the game play is fun at all player counts. As stated above, I don't like the semi-cooperative nature of this game, because I'd rather win/lose as a team or have a traitor on my team. It's not very fun with newer games explaining to them that their team won, but they didn't and leaves some people scratching their heads. Therefore, I would say if you are a fan of this period in time, consider picking up the game. If you are not, the game might still be for you, just at a lower price point than MSRP, so wait for a sale.
