Fast and challenging, varied setup options, extremely competitive...we love it!
I have been nothing but surprised with Imhotep The Duel since first opening it. In what is quite a small box I found I was punching out all kinds of tokens and pieces with iconography on it that I thought was going to be difficult to play and hard to learn, I soon learned I was wrong there. The surprises continued and I ended up finding an extremely fast 2 player game with some strategic if not sometimes sneaky tactics I could take during the game to strive for the win. Having said that, my wife beats me a lot at this game as your strategy is built around some degree of luck and how far you will push your luck; also she is a great player on her own and counts on me over thinking things. The game is built around worker placement, area control, as I mentioned before some push your luck mechanics, and set collection. All those punched out tokens that I previously thought were going to be difficult to manage once you’ve begun playing quickly find their place in their respective set collection areas of your player boards. You’ll be unloading the tokens to the areas you think you’ll score the most points with in no time and easily recognize and be familiar with the special action tiles that can be used on your turn. With a super easy set up and quick to learn rules you’ll move on to strategy and planning while playing your very first game of Imhotep The Duel.Players will take turns placing 1 of 4 meeples onto the 3x3 player grid in an attempt to secure certain tokens that are placed randomly on the 6 boats docked around the board. With this grid setup and the way the boats are positioned around you, your meeple placement can be aimed at both a row and column simultaneously, thus the strategy of where you make your placement choices. Once any row or column has at least 2 meeples a player may as an action choose to unload a boat then transferring the pieces to their own player tableau which they accumulate in a first in last out method. You may even choose to unload a boat that contains none of your own player pieces and in so might force your opponent to take pieces that are not as valuable to them and then set yourself up to gain pieces they wanted. It feels like a dirty trick has been played on you and you’ll be forced to change your strategy and look at other scoring possibilities, this trick though is part of the push your luck system that is in place to make players think a lot about their moves and what moves their opponent might be taking or planning next. This game has earned a place in our travel games collection and is perfect anytime for a quick game or two during the work week. The quick setup, play, tear down, and replayability make this a very high scorer for us, and this is all before you even play the B sides of the four set collection boards. The B side of the pyramid board especially is a fun one as it adds a bit of take that to the game. This game slightly edges out another 2 player favorite and that is 7 Wonders Duel, the fast play time and easy set up is something we really enjoy from this strategic and surprising game.

We LOVE board games and are always on the hunt for another good 2 player games for date night. This is not overly complicated, but still interesting and can be played in 30 min. There are also a few variations available within this box. It’s not as complex as 7 wonders dual, our favorite game, but shorter to set up & our kids can play this one.

A quick and fun two player game. I prefer 7 wonders duel, but this is a solid game to have in the rotation. Only ok replay value which keeps it from a 5*

Finally cracked this open to play with my girlfriend. Setup doesn't take a long and the instructions are easy to pick up. During the game we only double-checked ourselves against the rulebook once or twice, and everything made sense.
Strategically it's a bit like tic-tac-toe with a continously clearing board as your pickup a variety of different scoring elements. Lots of different ways to play and fun to try and block your opponent in one way and see you've left something else open.

My husband and I play a game together most days. We have a decent collection of 2 player games and this has added something fun and different. This also has the ability to change the game around a bit which can add some variety to each time we play Imhotep Duel. It also requires some strategy to play.

If you are familiar with the original 4 player version of this game, and enjoy that, then purchasing this is a no-brainer. In comparison, the rules for this version: The duel, are deceptively simple. It can be taught fairly quickly and is very easy to understand. But, once the game has begun, the strategies and complexities of the game become evident. This tiny worker placement game is HUGE on strategy. It is not merely a rehash of the original. Rather, the creator was able to take a few key elements and develop a brand new game.

The length of the game is on the shorter side, but not so short that it goes by in a flash. And, just like it's predecessor, there are a number of variations that can be introduced should you tire of the same old game. The boards flip over to reveal "B" sides that play very differently than the "A" sides.

I'm happy to have this game as an addition to my collection and it does not take up much room!

*Preface: I have not played the full 2-4player version*

This game felt very shallow to me. It has a very tic-tak-toe style feel to it. I do not know if that was the intention, but there wasn’t much under the surface after that. You select your tiles, and place them in the appropriate areas, and score them based on what you have. Blocking and forcing your opponent to “offload” is the only major aspect of this game. I’m a big fan of more heavy games, so this one will not be making it to the table very often. Not a bad game, just not for me.

We have only played this once so far, but can already see it has a lot of replayability!

Plenty of colourful, well-made playing pieces. It comes in a good-sized box and is very portable. It doesn't require a large playing surface, so would make a good game to take on holiday.

We found we needed to think quite hard before making a move... do I make a move that improves my Empire... or do I make a move that spoils my opponent's chances?!

The multi-scoring system is very good, so you can't be sure who has won until the final scores are added up!

With double-sided home boards to increase the variety and strategy of play, we are looking forward to playing this game many, many more times!
