Product Description
In the year 2097, the entire earth was enveloped in a cataclysmic climate shift plunging the globe into another ice age. Over 90% of the world's population was eliminated, driving the survivors to band together into loose communities and tribes. Each player is the leader of a small tribe of survivors. Resources, tools, medicine, and mercenaries are all in scarce supply. Each tribe is pitted against other tribes in a fight for survival. The players build up their tribes, skirmish against other players' tribes, and can even bluff on the way to victory. The leader who gathers the largest tribe will win the game! HQ expansion: The first expansion for Arctic Scavengers introduces the notion of a base camp or headquarters for each tribe. This base camp consists of a Tribal Leader (complete with special abilities) and the potential to construct buildings that can be used strategically during game play. Additionally, the game introduces alternative victory paths, new mercenaries, new tools, and the addition of the "engineering schematics" pile. Recon expansion: The world of Arctic Scavengers pits players against one another in an attempt to survive a post-apocalyptic ice age. As the competing tribes developed and grew, headquarters were established for each tribe (supported via the HQ expansion that shipped with the first release). As the tribes evolved further and struggled for dominance, information has become the most valuable currency. In this new world, deception reigns, leading to a need for reconnaissance.

It is a deck builder game, but in a way that you don't really realize it until you've reached the end of the game, so very entry level for the base game. Lots of variety with all of the different expansions or cards to switch in or out. The first 3 "warm up" rounds are a tad awkward feeling, but necessary.
The box insert is very helpful for organization and definitely one of my favorite of any games. The cards could be a little more sturdy and have seen some wear and tear. Or they could also use some card sleeves to help

A lot of potential players may get turned off by the bleak, post-apocalyptic theme, but tell them to get past that, because this game is seriously awesome. I’ve played a lot of deck builders, and for me this is the best one.
Update after 4 plays (with 2 and 4 player counts):
Tragically underrated, highly strategic deck building game. Playing with the included HQ expansion is a must. A lot of potential players may get turned off by the bleak, post-apocalyptic theme, but tell them to get past that, because this game is seriously awesome. I’ve played a lot of deck builders, and for me this is the best one.
In the base game, in each turn you must decide how much of your meager resources to devote to:
- hiring mercenaries to join your tribe
- digging through the junkyard for meds, tools, and other resources to survive
- assigning tribe members to defend against other tribes
With the included (and must-play) HQ expansion, the game really blossoms strategically. Now you have:
- tribe leaders who grant special abilities that significantly change your strategy
- formerly useless cards like Refugees can now play a (much darker, let's leave it at that) part in your tribe's success.
- Medics can make meds and counter sniper attacks
- Engineers can find and use Engineering Schematics to start constructing buildings.
- Buildings grant bonuses like more meds per turn, or allow you to stockpile meds or weapons to aid in your survival.
So far no runaway leader issues, and each game plays in a tense, compact 45-60 minutes (assuming no serious AP). Highly recommended!

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2020Just got this and I must say, while I am still unsure if it is the best deck building game as some claim, it is really fun. The theme fits in really well with the mechanics and style of play as players seek to increase the number of refugees in their groups while attacking other players or groups. Players can scavenge junk piles with the possibility of getting good items, hire mercenaries, and attack other players. The added expansions allow for players to pick and choose what cards to use changing the game enough to make each game feel unique. Even playing this game solo with the recon expansion rules is a ton of fun. Set up and take down is relatively quick and the games are long enough and very entertaining.
The biggest complaint I have is not with the game itself, but the box it comes in and its storage solution. It feels nice at first being able to separate all the cards neatly into little slots for quick set up, but I realized after a few days this creates quite a problem. Cardboard boards rest on top of the cards and have started to cause many cards to bend due to the weakness of the stacks they lay on as many cards are separated only into small piles of 3, 5, 8, and 10. Not enough strength to support the seemingly small weight of the five boards and two rule books. So, half of my core set cards have a curve to them that will permanently make them stand out every time I shuffle. I recommend finding an alternative way to store cards and tossing the plastic divider that it comes with.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2016Fun game. Still developing strategies for it, and you will find yourself thinking about how to outsmart your opponenets for the next round. "Do I grow my crew and have the largest army?" "Do I hog my resources for the best units first?" "Should I try to win every skirmish?"
No one strategy is perfect, and there are many paths to victory, which adds to the game's challenge and strategic opportunities.
And all that is even before you check out the expansion deck!
Highly recommended for players looking to play a game of wits, and try to mess with your opponents' heads.
Simple enough to learn. But I recommend setting a "turn timer" to keep the action going and the game within 60 minutes.

So much variation, still haven't gotten to the 2nd layer of the game. I personally like it, hard to get the crowd together though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Game!
Absolutely love this game. Bought it about a month ago and have played 5 or 6 times with different people and everyone has enjoyed it. The game play takes a couple of rounds to get used to, but after that it is massive fun. Plenty of strategy is involved, with a little bit of luck when it comes to what cards you pick up out of your deck and what card you win in the contested resource pile.
I have not even begun to play with the expansions yet, but have looked at them, and seen that they give you so many different ways to play, meaning replayability is very high. The artwork on the cards is very detailed and realistic, and the game is well explained in the instructions. Highly recommend for all game lovers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, challenging, and doesn't take hours to play!
Great game! It has a lot of expansions and various ways to play, so you can choose each time how you want to play. The first game or two takes longer to play as you are figuring out how things work. After that, you can play a game in about 45 minutes, which is nice for a game that is more complex/requires more strategy. Sometimes more complex games take hours and hours to play and we don't have that long to give!
