5.0 out of 5 stars Great table presence!
Reviewed in the United States on 6 September 2023
This is a cooperative adventure game , where all players are against the game. Working together , you are trying escape from the baddies , with at least one piece of gold. Orcs , goblins , and trolls 🧌 are breaking in to the Fortress to steal your gold. The game has adjustable difficulty levels , so that's a plus. We barely won 🏆 on easy. One of the coolest aspects of this game is , the bottom of the game box , houses the molded plastic Fortress! It looks awesome on the table , but beware , there are 5 ways to lose and only 1 way to win! Very challenging and fun! Designed by Dr Reiner Knizia , the most prolific board game designer, in the history of board gaming.

      Title “The Siege of Runedar”
A co-op dwarven defense game with a generic fantasy theme. Build a custom deck limited to 12 cards by upgrading cards and culling your deck. Defend a fortress against an onslaught of baddies.

      Pros:
      • The Board: The box/board is the fort you’re defending.
      • Artwork
      • Limited to 12 cards in your deck. You just exchange out for better cards as the game progresses. Your hand is always five cards, so there are no “Buy” or “Draw” cards which make turns simple and straightforward and not last forever.
      • Co-op
      Cons:
      • The fort is there for aesthetic purposes only. Your dwarves may as well be standing in an open field. The orcs move over all the walls unimpeded and are not stopped when encountering your character.
      • For a game themed around defending a siege, there is no defense, none of the enemies attack. It’s like whack-a-mole. Orcs appear and you try and snuff them before they reach the gold. If they do manage to reach the gold they magically disappear into the ether, they don’t have to make it back out with the gold.
      • The game has a 3D board/fort but 2D cardboard pieces. For a $60 price point it could have managed some miniatures. Especially because there aren’t that many.
      • Artwork: The cards show the dwarves with no feet because that’s how they appear in their stands. Put feet back on for the cards, it looks silly.
      • I didn’t find the game play particularly satisfying. Most cards can only be used for one purpose, and I frequently felt like I just didn’t accomplish much on my turn.
      • One Strategy: The only strategy seems to be to allow orcs to take some gold at the beginning while farming resources as fast as you can. If you spend time trying to protect all your gold you’ll get into late mid game and be way behind and ultimately end up losing.
      • Damage: Damage is confusing. Melee attacks require two “hits” to get one damage. Each crossbow is equal to one damage. Trolls and Goblins however require the specified number of hits, but still one crossbow for one damage. Siege equipment inexplicably are defeated by one crossbow roll result. It just doesn’t feel intuitive to me.
      • The difficulty is really just increasing the amount of rubble you have to remove, thereby increasing pressure to dig even more quickly.

      Conclusion:
For me this game was a flop. I was super excited to have a game where you’re manning the battlements and plugging up holes in your defense, repairing walls and holding off hordes of orcs and goblins as they pile up outside your walls. I just found myself wanting to be playing Zombicide instead. I would pass on this game.
