Best Murder/Mystery Game So Far!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2024I enjoyed all 3 mysteries. Hard to say which was my favorite. Outstanding clue placement. The solutions were very nice. I enjoyed the feel of playing with different clues in each game.
Highly recommended for mystery buffs.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2023You can replay the cases, but you can easily pass them on to friends. I think doing them with 2 is best and I wouldn't play with more than 4
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2025Graphics is heavily underused.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2022We've done more than a couple of these "solve a mystery/murder" games and this was the best by far. It solves a lot of the problems we've run into with other games by enforcing more of a "board game" aspect to it. Due to the format/mechanics of the game, you actually get three separate mysteries in the box set, so that makes this even more of a great value.
Here are a couple of reasons why this game is superior :
-In other games you are presented with a mass of evidence, in the form of documents, etc. Then since there is no clear place to start, you just start reading papers, looking at photographs etc. for quite a bit of time to get started. For this game most of the evidence is provided in the form of a deck of large cards. Each card has a number in it. You start with card 1, which then provides you with choices of other cards to flip over, base on which direction you want your investigation to go. In gets the investigation going in a guided way so you're making choices immediately and then branches out exponentially quickly. So still lots of decisions to make, but in a guided way so that you're not just sitting there for a while not sure how to get going.
-In other games you may run into a dead-end or roadblock in the investigation. This may be because your overlooked something, but can also be cause the game design was lacking in that moment, a bad clue or badly designed piece of evidence or a jump in logic you're supposed to make that the designers didn't feel a different choice was just as likely. This can be really frustrating. This game maybe you go down a decision branch that isn't as fruitful as you'd like or turns out to be a red herring, but its part of the game and you know immediately. Then you just return to an earlier choice available to you that hasn't been explored yet, flipping over a new card. You've never hit a dead-end as long as you still have available cards/options to flip over.
-In other games there is a phase at the end where you think you know what the final answer, but you're not sure, so you basically review everything once again. Its a high pressure point, cause once you open the final answer envelope, you are either right or wrong. In this game at any point you can modify your answer to the scenarios final questions of who, how, why, etc. You get more points though for locking in those answers earlier in the game before you've flipped over too many cards. But in the end, you still just keep flipping all the cards over until you reach the end of the clues, at which points you can still change your answers to the final questions, before opening the final envelope. Then you get a higher score for figuring out everything earlier. This is a great way of addressing the problem of other games, cause you know you'll get to all the clues eventually, and there is a definitive point at which point you move from that stage of the game to opening the final answers.
I loved this version of this solve a mystery game. I look forward to completing all the scenarios in this box and then probably buying additional sets in the series. I would recommend this to anyone who is into solving a mystery with some friends!

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE it! Best, non anxiety inducing, murder mystery that felt like a board game
NO SPOILERS
Let me begin by saying that the components in this game are very nice. The cards and solution for each mystery have their own beautifully designed compartment and the “documents” for the mysteries sit right on top.
The questionnaire is white board marker safe, allowing you to keep score and not ruin the chart for future plays.
The entire game itself is made with such a quality that you can pass this around to your whole family to solve for themselves.
I like that everything is half guided by numbers on the cards indicating what cards you can pull next but it also gives you enough freedom to decide what cards you want to draw. Most cards give you 3 different questions or directions you can take and each option is attached to a specific card. You can choose one, all, or none of them to pursue. But what you can’t do is choose any card at random (it must be shown on a card or document).
PROBLEMS
This is a good time to mention the only problems we had with this mystery. The directions don’t tell you explicitly that the documents (the map for the first mystery) might have spots on it that allow you to pull more cards. For instance, on the first mystery document of the manor, you can search each room or clue spots. We ended up talking to every person we could before we realized that. I hope this doesn’t happen to you.
I like the card sizes because it allows you to dispay them out on the table next to eachother and fit all cards on an averaged size table
I completed the first mystery and must say I am blown away. I loved everything about the narrative I experienced and the gameplay itself. I love how the mechanics are very board-game-like. They don’t just dump a ton of information on you all at once and say “solve this mystery”.
The way they went about it, one card at a time made it feel like you were inching your way towards solving the mystery and not really getting caught up in a web of ideas and theories.
And man, it was so clever how they explained the whole solution to the mystery. They even went so far as to explain a few other mysteries that you may have considered whilst trying to solve the murder of Mary.
Now, on a more personal note. I just stopped a cold case murder mystery game and started this one because that one seemed too modern and too realistic. I started getting anxiety. This game made me really feel like I was solving a murder mystery, yet the early 1900s setting kept me from getting that anxiety.

5.0 out of 5 stars Open world investigation
When I see it this, it immediately reminded me of Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective, and Detective: City of Angels. Then Watson & Holmes, Crime Zoom, and Sherlock Files, all of which I enjoy immensely for that detective gaming kick. And this definitely doesn’t disappoint!
In gist, you get a beginning storyline and a set of questions you need to answer by game-end, to kickstart your investigation which opens up for you to choose freely to interview persons/ check out a place/ investigate a clue by reading up the corresponding cards which could in turn provide you with further links to follow up on - even this is entirely up to you to take or not, depending on whether you find it a red-herring or worthy of pursuit.
Plus there’s an interesting part about clue searching where the simple but clever card design would let the investigator do stuff like finger print matching to see which belongs to who. So it isn’t just about reading cards’ texts and wrapping my head around things but also a bit of activity there to spice the investigation up a little.
All in all there’s a lot of open world sleuthing which is right in my wheelhouse and the kind of game I’d go ham on! Only slight down side though is the big footprint of the game as a big space is needed to lay out the cards for everyone (solitaire is ok too) to see and discuss about.
