- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2024Style: ExpansionVerified PurchaseYou use an app to search for clues and some mysteries. The clues are on cards using QR codes so you can scan them anytime as if you were actually searching the item or area. It’s very interactive and engaging for parents and kids.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2024Style: ExpansionVerified PurchaseMy 8yo and 6yo love to play this game! When we welcomed a new baby to the family and had ample time at home, Dad whipped this game out and showed them how to use it. After one game they were hooked and started to play on their own with the stronger reader narrating the game. Highly recommend for children close in age who could use a bonding activity! I love the critical thinking skills it encourages! We bought another set because they loved it so much.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2024This is a standalone second iteration to a well-done kid-focused app + board adventure game, and it is a worthy successor that my daughter and I have had good times with.
It uses the mechanic of scanning cards and standees and location tiles to interact with them.
When you scan locations, you travel to them, when you scan characters, you talk to/interact with them, and when you scan items you attempt to apply/discuss them to/with whatever you’re interacting at the time.
Note that there is a lot of reading, so this isn’t really something a kid that can’t read well will be able to do on their own. Though of course it works fine if an adult or older kid is willing to be the reader.
As you play each chapter, you build a little map of locations you discover, that’s arranged differently every time (and there are enough different locations that you always get some new unique ones, as well).
Whenever you discover a location, or something updates within a location, the app pulls up a 3d sphere view of the area that you can pan around in to try and discover characters, adjacent locations, and items present there that you can interact with or acquire. This is an ongoing minigame that is a big part of gameplay.
The other major part of gameplay is talking to characters, about each other and about items, and figuring out where to go next and what item to use to deal with the issue at hand and/or progress your next task. Fairly standard adventure video game stuff, translated to an augmented board/card game format.
All of this could of course be done purely within an app, but having the real-life element makes for a nice hybrid, that provides the attractive and tactile elements like cards and cardboard standees you manipulate, that make board gaming an appealing activity to share with physically-present people.
The art is lovely. The writing and dialogue are good, and the problems and tasks at hand are interesting enough to keep players invested. The puzzles are mostly straightforward, though very little kids will certainly not have any idea what to do without help.
On the rare occasion when you really get stumped and can’t figure out what to do even after some trial-and-error (and there’s really no time or turn limit or anything, so you can keep trying stuff if nothing else), you can ask the Old Oak Tree for a clue. And that was always sufficient to point us in the right direction.
This is a great game to play with your imaginative, inquisitively-minded kid, and I hope they keep making them.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2023I recently had the chance to play Kids Chronicles: The Old Oak Prophecy with my family, and it's been a captivating experience. This game stands out with its unique combination of a physical board game and app-driven gameplay. It's designed for ages 7 and up, and takes about 30-45 minutes to play, fitting perfectly into a family game night.
The game's tutorial system deserves a special shout-out. It's incredibly user-friendly, allowing players to dive right into the action after a brief read-through of the rules. The integration of the app is seamless, guiding players through the forest as they search for gems to save it from doom. The interactive element of scanning QR codes on characters and items to solve puzzles adds a modern twist to the board game experience.
Each scenario is just the right length to keep kids engaged without feeling too dragged out. It's wonderful to see the excitement in the kids, always eager to jump into the next adventure. However, parents should note that there is a significant amount of reading involved, which might be challenging for younger players, as was my case. The presence of an adult to help with narration and managing the app is essential.
One minor downside is that the game can be heavy on smartphone battery usage, so it's advisable to start with a full charge. Also, while the discovery aspect of the map tiles is engaging, the symbols on the back can be a bit confusing to describe, especially for younger players. This can sometimes slow down the gameplay as kids try to interpret these symbols.
The artwork in the game is absolutely stunning, adding to the immersive experience. It's visually engaging and keeps everyone's attention. The physical components are well-made, although some signs of wear and tear might appear with frequent use.
Overall, Kids Chronicles: The Old Oak Prophecy is a great addition to family game nights. It combines traditional board game elements with modern technology in a way that's both fun and educational. While there are a few minor issues, they don't significantly detract from the overall positive experience. It gets a solid 4 stars from me, and I look forward to continuing our adventures in the magical forest!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2023This would have been better as choose your own adventure book. Most of the game is sifting through cards trying to find the right one to match the tableau. Then everyone's favorite mechanic: scanning QR codes in the right order? Oh, you have a BUNCH of QR codes laying around because you keep having to look through every single standee and card? Great, lets accidentally scan those, too.
There's simply not much to DO in this game. Look at scene. Find matching cards/people. Scan QR codes in the right order.
The art is evocative and gorgeous and the only great thing about this game.
