Inkling Game – 18 Feb. 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
Splashes of dark ink on a blank page, the characters illegible - or are they? The line that seemed like a scribble, could it perhaps be the letter N, or is it a Z on its side? And that circle, is it an O or a Q, or maybe part of a B? You can't know for sure, but you might have an inkling.
Inkling is a word game for 3 to 6 players with an innovative twist. Each turn you will play your letter cards in front of you, hoping the players next to you can glean the words you're trying to convey - but without the perfect letters you will need to get creative! How you go about that is up to you: rotate your cards, play them upside down or on their side, or have them overlap one another - whatever it takes to get your meaning across.

From the Publisher
Designed by John Keyworth and illustrated by Kwanchai Moriya, Inkling is a fast-playing light word game for 3-6 players in which creativity trumps vocabulary!
Your goal is to communicate your secret clue words to the players on your left and right, while also deciphering those players’ clue words in return. To do so, you’re going to need to use ink cards, which provide you with the letters you’ll need to spell out words. However, you aren’t restricted to just the letter as written on the card – rotate an N to become a Z, flip a T upside-down to read as an L, or perhaps combine a V and an I to make a Y!
Phase 1: Arrange ink cards
Arrange your ink cards face up in front of you, in any way you choose, in order to convey as many of your clue words as possible over the course of the game. You may use your ink cards in any way you like – changing their orientation, covering part of a card with another card, spelling words incorrectly.
As long as you’re just using your ink cards and never showing your clue card, you have total freedom; get creative!
Phase 2: Guess clue words
Once you have all completed your arrangements, try and guess what clue words the players on your left and right have communicated. Secretly write down your guesses on your scoresheet.
Phase 3: Draw ink cards
Once you have all made all the guesses you wish to make for the round, you will get more ink cards for the next round, giving you more cards to play with for the future rounds. You skip this step in the third and final round.
Game end
After you have completed three rounds, reveal you clue cards and calculate the final scores. You score points for each clue word you guessed correctly, as well as for each of your clue words that you successfully communicated to the players next to you.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 December 2021Inkling is a game simple in concept - you use abstract letter-shaped cards to spell out entirely different words so that other players can guess them. Quickly you find yourself desperately squinting and turning your head at your creation on the table trying to convince yourself that it was blindingly obvious you'd spelt out "ELEPHANT" without any cards that look remotely like Es, while in the same breath staring at your friend's work and wondering what on earth a "EOUIPENT" is supposed to be! It's really easy to pick up, can be as quick as you like and has great replayability. 10/10 would buy again.
