You are head of a family in an Italian city-state, a city run by a weak and corrupt court. You need to manipulate, bluff and bribe your way to power. Your object is to destroy the influence of all the other families, forcing them into exile. Only one family will survive...
In Coup, you want to be the last player with influence in the game, with influence being represented by face-down character cards in your playing area.
Each player starts the game with two coins and two influence e.g. two face-down character cards; the fifteen card deck consists of three copies of five different characters, each with a unique set of powers...

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 November 2023Style Name: CoupPattern Name: SingleVerified PurchaseReally clever game that reminds me of poker with RPG elements. Games can be over in minutes or take an hour depending on how you play. A true thinkers game. It takes a while to get the rules - but once you do it’s plan sailing. Watching people play or getting someone to guide you for the first couple hands is a good way to learn.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 August 2014Style Name: CoupPattern Name: SingleVerified PurchaseGreat fun little game. I was amazed at how quick it was - a 3/4 player game lasts just under 10 minutes. It's a game where you need to bluff your way through and there is a nice mixture of skill and luck.
You start off with two cards which for some reason they describe as influence - I would have labelled them as lives. You take actions depending on what cards you have and what you actually want to do. If you want to pretend to be a different character and use their action you can. Any player around the table can challenge what you've done after you've attempted to take your action. If they catch you out you lose a card and a life, if you were telling the truth you reveal the truthful card and they lose one of their cards and a life. You also get to swap a card you've revealed which is a nice touch to enable the bluffing to continue. When you run out of cards you are out. The last one standing wins.
I thought to begin with that it would always be best to tell the truth but there is a definite need to bluff and to stop others knowing what you really have. The bluffing gives you real advantage in the later stages of the game. You also need to race others to the 7 coins for a coup as there is no way to block it - this is then the reason for the bluffing to enable you to get there first, or when you're one on one to beat someone else to the win.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 January 2016Style Name: CoupPattern Name: SingleVerified PurchaseCoup is a short bluffing game where players take actions based on the characters they have (or are pretending to have). Using a combination of deception, deduction and luck the aim is to be the last surviving player. Life is fragile in Coup - players will need to decide carefully when they can afford to bluff (or call a bluff) as the consequences of getting it wrong are deadly.
Learning the rules will take 5 mins and games usually last about 10 mins. Whilst you can play with 2 or 3 players I've found the game to be much more fun with a higher number.
Marcus Brutus:
+ Game is easy to learn/teach and the summary cards included provide a good reminder of the available actions whilst you play.
+ Scope for a variety of strategies - do you play aggressively for a 'strong' position, or act passively in the hope of avoiding attention?
+ The physical quality of the game is good and the artwork on the cards is great.
+ Good mechanics to prevent stalling and stalemate.
+ Compact and portable - great for the pub or holidays.
Julius Caesar:
- If you get killed off quickly you're stuck waiting for the game to finish (although games have a short duration so the wait isn't too long).
- I found short term re-playability to be limited; I wouldn't be interested in playing more than a few games in one sitting as it gets a bit repetitive. Longer term re-playability is better though, especially with different groups of people.
Unless you really don't like bluffing games (e.g. from playing One Night Ultimate Werewolf or similar) you'll probably enjoy playing Coup. It's quick, fun and not too expensive, making it accessible and enjoyable for both regular gamers and those with a more casual interest.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 May 2022Style Name: CoupPattern Name: SingleVerified PurchaseWe were introduced to this game by a friend. We were a bit sceptical at first, but as soon as the first round was over we were hooked! I bought it for my family holiday and now my sister has bought it for some of her friends as a gift too!
It’s pretty straightforward to get the hang of (the more players - up to 6! - the more competitive and challenging!). Rounds can go by pretty quickly but it certainly doesn’t get boring - a game to play over and over again!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 August 2020Style Name: CoupPattern Name: SingleVerified PurchaseI bought this along with a few other board games to play at my cousin's over Christmas. This one was the quickest to set up and easiest to learn. There are very few pieces (deck of cards + coins) and within 5-10 minutes of opening the pack everyone is able to understand how to play it. The quality of the product is amazing. I really liked the art style of the cards themselves as well as the coins. Although my fibbing skills weren't the best, I still had a great time playing this. Definitely pick this game up if you're in the market for a new card game to play with your family and friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Learn, Quick to Play
Style Name: CoupPattern Name: SingleVerified PurchaseRecommendation: 5 stars
Ease to Learn: 4 stars

Good for Adults: 5 stars
Short time to play: 5 stars
Value for money: 4.5 stars
This game is best learned by someone who has played it.
It takes about 3 rounds to understand it sufficiently with someone who has played it. The game is then easy to learn and interesting. We played about 3 rounds in 40 minutes, so each game doesn't take long--about 12-14 minutes.
The idea is that each player gets 2 player cards. Each player card has a different character and there are are 3 of each character that does a specific function. You play your role as one of your characters or fib about having a character you don't have. For instance, you say, I am a Duke and will collect 3 money tokens (each turn you get tokens, the number you get is determined by your character cards or your ability to convince everyone else you have a specific card). If someone says they don't think you are a Duke and call you out, you lose a character card if you were lying. If you weren't, they lose a card. When you have 7 money tokens, you can assassinate another player to eliminate one of their character cards. Therefore, collecting money quickly and calling people out who you think are fibbing, is the game. The last person standing wins.
There are elements of fibbing, selling, convincing, strategy, and elimination that are all part of the game. My family loves this. The game says 14+ but my 10 year old loves this game and tends to win a lot.
If this sounds like fun, consider the Night of the Werewolf game as well--similar time to play, easy to do with the app on your phone and almost zero learning curve.
The price is good.
I would recommend.
