Product Description
You've joined a hot air balloon race in which the goal is to go higher than your opponents. Dump as many sandbags as you can — and try to gain rockets as well! — to send yourself higher and higher to win. Sandbag is a trick-taking game of avoiding tricks, manipulating trump, and reconfiguring your hand of cards. In each of the three rounds, you create your “basket” with two face-up cards. The most common color among all players' “basket” cards is the trump suit. Each trick, players either play from their hand, play a sandbag (to sluff, to avoid winning the trick), or play one of their opponents' face-up “basket” cards. During the round, it's possible for the trump to change as the number and suit of face-up cards are exchanged for face-down cards. Five rocket cards worth negative points are in play each round. You want to win these while avoiding the regular cards because in the end, the player with the lowest score wins! Sandbag is a highly interactive trick-taking game for 3-6 players that excels at higher player counts!

Thinky but Simple Trick Taking Card Game

- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2024I have played MANY trick taking games. They are a favorite of mine. I really enjoyed this trick taking game. The twists in the game add for some fun hands. Being able to change the trump in the middle of a hand has led to some great fun (or frustration depending on your position in the game). Because of the ability to swap or throw down a sandbag, there were many unexpected hands that made this game very enjoyable (even though I was the one losing from the things my kids were doing). I like that it's difficult to create a single path to victory since things can change on you. You can't come up with a strategy and use that strategy through the whole game, you have to keep changing your plans every hand. I feel I did a lot more thinking in this trick taking game then most of the others I've played. If you like trick taking games and want to add a little variation to the genre, this is definitely a game you should get. Definitely worth the low cost.
Age: My kids play a lot of games and could have easily picked up on this game and played without help at 5 years old. (Their strategy would be questionable, but they could easily play.) If you're child seldomly plays games, I would start this game at 7 or 8 years old. You do end up sticking people with tricks. If you're child is sensitive to competitive games where he thinks people are mean when they purposely give him a trick, this is not a game for your kid.
Rules: The rules are fairly clear to understand. The only thing I misinterpreted and had to read through a couple of times to make sure I played right was their use of "sandbag". You will have two cards face up in front of you at the start of each round called the basket and you will have one (possibly more in rounds 2 or 3) sideways cards face down called the "sandbag". I was confused because when someone swaps from your basket they replace it with a face down card and on the back of the card it says "sandbag" and I thought those swapped cards were also sandbags, but they are not. They are still part of the basket and cannot be used as a sandbag. As long as I am interpreting the rules right, you will always end a round with the two basket cards in front of you (possibly face up or down depending on if people swapped with you).
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2025This trick taking game looks like it should be fun. I grew up on playing trump and spades and I met my husband playing Hearts -- so trick taking games are old hat to me. I thought this would be a great addition to our Christmas vacation gaming sessions.
Unfortunately, the instructions just seemed to put my whole family off. No matter how attractive the box and cards are, if you put the game back in the box after the first page of instructions, it's not a good use of your money.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2024This one is a keeper. The goal is to NOT take sandbags, as each sandbag is a point and points are bad. The player with the fewest points wins.
Each player has a hand of cards from zero to ten, and they also just might have a rocket which is worth minus points. You DO want those rocket cards.
Each player places two cards face up in front of them, and one (usually a really high card) face down that can be played at any time to help you avoid taking a trick.
It plays like a regular trick taking game (Hearts/Spades/Oh Hell), so that each player has to play the same suit that was led if they have it. If they don't have it, they can dump anything they want, or play a trump card.
Trump is the color that is most common face up in front of each player.
Trump can change because you can take face up cards with one of your cards by exchanging it face down.
It takes a round to get your head around it, and then you start to see all the options you have.
Absolutely love this with 4-6 players, and it's probably good at 3, but I have not played it at 3.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2025Grew up playing hearts, spades and rook so I love trick taking games.
This adds some fun twists on trump color and game play. At first it's a bit confusing on how to properly use the twists to your advantage but after a few games the use of sandbags and other cards makes this have standout.
The other aspect is this isn't just a 4 player game (most trick games are 4 player) so it's fun when you have different number of people.
For 4 players I still prefer hearts or rook (maybe because I'm old and cranky) but this has earned a place in our rotation.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2025It takes some time to learn, but after a few rounds the game really starts to pick up. Fun for those who like adding a little extra thinking into their trick-taking games.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2024Sandbag by Bezier Games, creators of the popular Cat in the Box Deluxe Edition, is a fast-paced, trick-taking card game designed for 3 to 6 players. With a playtime of around 30 minutes, it offers an engaging and strategic experience that keeps players on their toes throughout the game.
