Product Description
In the mid-22nd Century, oceans have engulfed the world. The remaining fragments of humanity survive on the few pieces of land left above sea level. In the Otys colony, you strive to build a future for your people by retrieving the submerged debris of past civilizations. In Otys, two to four players send their best divers to salvage useful materials from the depths. Optimize your strategy by matching your divers' special abilities, depth levels, and Colony bonuses. Be careful, though—divers must surface after each mission to replenish oxygen and regain special abilities. - Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2020I picked this up because it was in sale and wasn’t expecting much, but the game has got a lot of interesting gimmicks. It’s really easy to pick up, but has many different ways to win, depending on your play style. Good for the casual gamer or the hard core veteran.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2018Otys is a surprisingly fun board game published by Libellud, the folks who handled Dice Forge. Much like Dice Forge, Otys features high quality components and a box designed to easily store all of them. Designed for 2-4 players and features a run time of about 60-90 minutes, depending on the player count. Set in a word in which the oceans have retaken much of the land, leading to diving crews conducting expeditions to recover resources. You will man a crew of 8 unique divers, racing to complete contracts and acquire the most points before the end of the game.
This game is, first and foremost, a "cube pusher" game. Otys gives each player their own diving rig board, 8 divers and little slots that allow you to move your diver from one end to the other, activating that level and any abilities the diver possesses. What is interesting here, is how any action you take with a diver, for instance acquiring one of four colored resource cubes, can only affect the level the diver is on. So if I have a contract for 4 of any type of resources, I have to be on a level with four open slots, and the matching cubes. Additionally, once I have activated a diver, I have to move him to the surface level and then push down all of the other divers. There is also a sponsors track, which offers different bonus benefits, depending on what level your diver activates from.
So in addition to figuring out how to maneuver your crew of divers to complete contracts and score points, you also have a mechanic and a hacker. Each time you activate a diver, you lock out that level and then barring the use of any special X cards, you cannot use that same level until you have reached your computer hacker's level. This starts at 6, requiring 6 locked levels prior to everything resetting. You can utilize certain diverse and bonuses to upgrade your hacker, allowing you to shorten this. Additionally you have a mechanic, who allows you to use oxygen tanks to manipulate the order of your divers, first by one track up or down and eventually as many as four at a time. Mastering these tracks will allow you to complete your contracts more efficiently.
You are also able to upgrade your divers, flipping their cards and allowing them to accomplish more each time they activate. Where things become chaotic, is with the Sponsorship track. The Sponsorship Track tiers allow you to do things like activate twice on one level, get bonus upgrades, oxygen, coins, etc. Any time a player uses their "X" token, used to allow them to take another action at a locked level, it causes the bottom of the Sponsorship Track to move to the top, pushing the other bonus levels down by one. This makes any strategies relying on those bonuses, to be completely dependent on what your opponent is planning to do. In 3-4 player games, this can make the Sponsorship Track a total wild card.
Overall, despite the game's beautiful cover not really properly conveying what this game is about, it is a lot of fun. The puzzle nature of it, will speak to gamers who enjoy head crunching and having to think and respond quickly to changes in the board state. While it can be frustrating to have an opponent score a contract you were working on, you should be easily able to see what resources they are gathering and plan accordingly. I found this to be a very fun game, featuring high quality components, solid and unique game play mechanics and really just a challenging (in a good way) game.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2018Very interesting medium weight Euro. I really like the unique action selection mechanics in this game. The player boards are all double thick and accommodate the keys and divers sliding back and forth.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2022Everyone enjoyed the game from age 13 to adults. Good strategy game although with decisions to make that might initially appear complex to some.
Main weakness is the rule book: no idea how to play after reading it! Find a video online that explains how to play the game - you will be much better off than reading the rule book a third time and still wondering how to play...
Boards need to have cards and markers that you put on the side of the boards (board for each player plus game board) - unfortunately, the boards (not perfectly flat perhaps due to shipping) and markers move very easily on a game table and they do not retain their position next to the other - when that position has a key impact on game playing (e.g., technician tiles can easily move from their position next to the player board), that is an issue. Game boards could have been better conceived to ensure key positions are maintained on the board...
Despite those two weaknesses the game remains enjoyable...

- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2022Playing the game is an interesting puzzle. I liked it solo. There are a lot of different areas you can manipulate and upgrading powers is fun. Multiplayer risks increased time length because players might spend a lot if time strategizing. Their strategy may change when the pieces all rotate and they may spend time restrategizing. I think it’s possible to zone out during another player’s turn because the board might change again anyway. I wish there was a mechanic of “following” like in Tiny Epic Galaxies so you are more invested in someone’s turn.
There is a mechanism to copy another player’s power and I can’t remember if that is available to use in the solo mode.
The game reminds me of Stefan Feld’s Aquasphere which has a lot of moving parts in different locations, but Otys is simpler and has a solo mode. Both games are also under water.
Components are OK. Maaaybbeee if there were 3D components that would amplify the experience. The cubes are larger than most other cubes in board games. I want to ditch them or maybe sticker them to make it more thematic. I have to work to make the theme come alive and probably if there was more theme the game would be more enjoyable.
As a solo game it has more substance than a simple solo card game, but it also takes up a lit of space. The box is also bigger than hoped for. If this game was smaller and took up less space I would love it more.
Otys is a good multiplayer/solo, puzzle, order fulfillment game that takes up a lot space and is more abstract than hoped for.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2022The game is elegant. It plays equally well with all player counts. You are diving and using different divers abilities to gather resources, and make sets of resources that you find. After making the correct set in your player board rows, you can pay for a contract (in the form of a card that is drawn). This will give you victory points. There is a sophisticated interaction with diver keys, earning bonuses, and using the divers abilities (that are at different levels).
This is an excellent game, and if you play games, you will like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great optimisation puzzle - great for solo players
This game is an underrated gem and works great for solo players as well. The mechanic of the game works well with the diving theme and it is very satisfying when you get to complete loads of public contracts in a row. For the price tag this board game is a no-brainer, it needs to be part of your collection if you enjoy the theme and love an optimisation puzzle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Infravalorado

5.0 out of 5 stars Exelente juego

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated game!
I bought this game when it was on a deal with very little knowledge of what the game would be like. Usually I play a lot of worker placement style games, however despite not being of that genre I really enjoyed this game.
The theme is a post apocalyptic world where you need to dive underwater in each round to retrieve useful materials from underwater.
There are different characters that have different bonuses based on their special abilities. Once a diver has been used they will then go to the surface and the remaining divers will move to deeper levels. This is an interesting mechanic that encourages you to use a variety of different methods of gaining points rather than just concentrating on one area.
The game boards are of good quality and the whole design has been well thought out and completed to a great standard with excellent artwork.
Overall I think this is a great game that I am glad I took a gamble on as it's now one of my new favourites.
