A Fun Game That Follows the Ebb and Flow of History's Great Empires!!!
Z-Man Games History of the World is the latest edition of this long running game. The first edition came out in the 1990s, I believe, and this is like the 5th or 6th version of the game since then. The game plays out over the course of five epochs. Based on scoring, players draft empire cards and event cards in opposite directions. On a player's turn they play their empire card, which tells them where they will place their capital and active (upright) army, and how many armies to put on their card. Throughout their turn they may place their armies in open areas of the world map adjacent to their other active armies, (or with the help of caravan and naval tokens), or may attack into areas with other players' inactive (laying down) armies. The attack roles two dice while the defender roles one (though there may be some mitigating factors that change that), and the attack compares their highest role with the defender. If the role is greater than the defender's the defender loses his army. If it is tied they both lose their army. If it is lower, the attacker may lay siege by placing armies from his empire card onto the siege engine, giving him a +1, +2, or +3 advantage in the battle. Over the course of the turn, the player's empire will expand. Event cards can also allow you to play dirty tricks on your opponents, and even create Kingdoms- mini empires that help you as well. At the end of the turn the player adds up his control of resource areas to build monuments, then adds up his control of regions, capitals, cities, and monuments to score. The player also lays all of his empire's units down, as the empire goes into decline. After every player has had a turn, region scoring values on the board are switched out and a new epoch begins.History of the World is a pretty simple game to learn and play. But it also takes some strategy every epoch. It's pretty cool seeing how the different nations rise throughout the epochs, from capital-less raiders like the Huns to the naval power of the British. It's also really fun playing the cards against your opponents, which adds a little unexpected spice to the game. But what is really cool is watching the rise and fall of great empires over time, watching the ebb and flow of world history. The only complaint I have with this game is the cardboard components- the forts and the siege train. I've never been a fan of 3D cardboard stuff like this games. I would rather just have had fortress tokens, and maybe a chart on the board for the siege train. Also- the card quality is good, but not great. Still, with all that aside, I really like History of the World. It's a fun and engaging game that new and experienced players will really take to.The Discriminating Gamer

This game has a surprising amount of depth for such an easy to learn game. Everything is very streamlined, combat takes only a few seconds, and there is a built-in game mechanism to help players in last place catch up to first place. This keeps every game competitive for all players until the very last turn. Great game!

This is my favorite strategy ever. It’s a bit cumbersome to learn the rules, but it is so worth the effort. It’s tons of fun trying to out maneuver your friends as you play as various empires throughout history. Wonderful strategy game with great replay-ability.

Some mechanics you probably wouldn't see in a more modern boardgame, but I favorite from highschool. Doesn't disappoint

Item arrived quickly and brand-new. I have the 2 previous versions, and wanted to compare. I will probably take some of the ideas in this newest version and combine them with the 2 other versions. But this really is my favorite game!

I was excited to get this for my history buff son, we must have spend an hour trying to figure out the rules, it's so confusing and we are college educated adults, best I can tell is it's kind of like risk.

I played an older version a long time ago and this version is inferior.

In terms of the aesthetic, it is much worse because they've replaced era-specific looking units with standardized pawn pieces. What this means is when you're in later epochs as the Spaniards attacking older empires instead of having musketeers taking on knights and spearmen, you simply have red pawns attacking other red pawns. There is no other reason for this other than it must have been cheaper to produce the game.

In regards to the mechanics, they have also made this worse. The mechanics which were already attacker-favored are now even more so with an unnecessarily clunky siege mechanic that has been added to the game. What this means is that interesting decisions that existed in the older game such as whether or not to fortify a bottleneck or capital city are now pointless because the attacking advantage guarantees it will be wiped out in the next turn or epoch. It also makes the mechanics unnecessarily more complicated while adding very little to the game.

Other minor complaints include having to assemble cheap cardboard fortifications pieces instead of prefabricated metal ones, less flavor description on the empire cards, and a subtle change to the map aesthetic which is more washed out and cartoony looking.

My biggest complaint is the choice to use a single type of piece which removes the enjoyable narrative element of seeing primitive units survive on the map throughout the ages. With the cheap universal piece they've decided to use (pawns), it is now impossible to tell how long pieces have been on the map. Not to mention that era-specific units look better as a historical game than simple geometric shapes crowding a map without differentiation.

The original game was great when I was younger because I didn't know much about history and I felt this hands-on experience gave me a good scope of the different eras of history. When I later would read about some of these empires, I had a map in my mind to place what I was reading. That might still be possible to some extent with this version but it's effectiveness and enjoyment has been reduced.
