Product Description

Accompany Frodo along a desperate journey as the fate of all Middle-earth hangs in the balance! The Black Riders Saga Expansion for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game allows you and your friends to directly relive Frodo’s travels and challenges from the early chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring. Step into the beloved fantasy world of J.R.R. Tolkien, journey out of Bag End, and hide from the fearsome Nazgûl. In three new scenarios, you’ll sneak out of the Shire, meet strangers in The Prancing Pony, battle undead foes at Weathertop, and race for the healing halls of Rivendell. In addition to its three scenarios, The Black Riders introduces five hero cards and thirty-three player cards (three copies each of eleven individual cards), which offer players a wealth of deck-building options for strategies built around Hobbits. Plus, a new Campaign Mode allows you to string the expansion's scenarios together as the first chapters of your epic journey to Mount Doom!

The Black Riders is a Saga Expansion for The Lord of The Rings: The Card Game, which is a Living Card Game by Fantasy Flight Games. Inside the box you will find 3 new quests based upon Frodo and Co.'s adventures from the first half of The Fellowship of the Rings, as well as new player cards and 5 new heroes to build decks around. All of the new heroes are Hobbits, and we are given a bevy of player cards to help them on their journey from The Shire to Rivendell. Most of the player cards play off the Hobbit keyword, providing a lot of synergy for a trait that has otherwise seen very little from previous expansions, but that's not to say that there aren't cards that will be able to fit in other decks. One example of that is the card Elf-Stone, which is arguably the best card in the set. For one Lore resource, you can attach it to a location. Said location gets +1 quest point, and once it is explored, you can put any ally in your hand into play.

The quests themselves ooze with theme, and there are many times where you can feel the tenseness of what Frodo and Co. were going through, hiding from the Black Riders, fighting off the Witch King from Weathertop, and the race against time to save Frodo and escaping the Nazgul in the Flight to the Ford. You can tell the designers really care about the source material, which makes the quests all the more enjoyable.

The designers at FFG take feedback from fans of the game really well, and have introduced two new modes of play for the game. Campaign Mode is intended for those who wish to play all of the quests from the Lord of the Rings Saga Expansions with the same heroes, in order. Depending on what decisions you make during each quest, a Boon or a Burden is added to either your deck or the encounter deck for the rest of the campaign. I like the idea, as it makes seemingly small decisions have a huge effect on future quests, but it is hard to say how successful the execution of this idea will be until the last Saga Expansion. Although Easy Mode was introduced a few months ago, I am including this as a new mode because the cards are now officially marked as to what constitutes Standard Mode and Easy Mode.

Overall, this is a great addition to the game, and very deserving of the 5 stars I have given it. The designers have really set the bar high for the future expansions, and hopefully they stand up to that high standard.
NOTE: You need a copy of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game Core Set to play this expansion.

I am one of those players who wasn't quite sure which expansions to get started with because there are so many...
I bought this one looking for some good player cards to keep and use for all other games I may play. This expansion overall provided good hobbit heroes and hobbit cards which are great for use in your other games (if you make a hobbit deck), and maybe like one card which could be used for non-hobbit decks.

I absolutely love the three nazgul quests in this expansion, because the theme is really good and you can just see scenes from either the movie or book happening right before your eyes. The unfortunate thing about this expansion is that because it is a saga expansion, its standalone gaming value is diminished. It's not one of those quests where I would just play one game. I would play this only if I was planning on playing all three, but that's just me. There are a good number of cards that add to the experience of the quests and effect how the next quest will be played... but are totally useless unless you are planning on playing the next quest. (And of course, when you finish quest three of the campaign you have no where to continue since the other expansion has yet to come out - but will in a couple weeks...) I haven't tried playing this as a non-campaign, but I would imagine it's not as good due to the 10-12 cards that really add amazing theme to the campaign.

Overall, I'm glad I bought it as a starter expansion. If you buy it just don't plan on gaining cards that really help out much with non hobbit decks!

So, I haven't played any of the scenarios in this expansion yet, but the player cards were definitely worth it. From a deck building perspective, I would very much recommend purchasing The Land of Shadow expansion because the cards in that expansion mesh extremely well with these cards. This expansion allowed me to make a Hobbit heroes only deck with a starting threat of 20 and a +4 engagement cost to all enemies. So far, it is my favorite deck I have ever built and very enjoyable to play with.

The Black Riders expansion covers the 1st half of "The Fellowship of the Ring." It introduces new hobbit hero's who are quite enjoyable to play. They have great synergy, and work well together. The scenarios involve avoiding the Black Riders, as they are quite dangerous to small hobbits. But don't think you can escape them forever, you will do battle with the Witch King and his compatriots. Campaign mode provides you with rich game play, and decisions that will echo throughout the entire series. The difficulty will have you deck building in no time. You will need the Core Set to play this expansion. 5 stars.

If you have someone in your life new to CCGs, or maybe has only ever played Magic: The Gathering, this is a great way to expand your core game experience. It has memorable characters you can latch onto if all you've seen is the movies as well as some lesser known characters in it.

Great value for core set owners because this expansion contains a fully supported hobbit deck, a powerful deck in it's own right, without having to purchase Adventure Packs for additional sphere/faction cards. In addition, the scenarios in this expansion ooze with theme and are scaled properly for solo/group play.
