From the manufacturer

The fate of your civilization rests upon your shoulders!
Monumental is a massive board game for 1 to 4 players (5 with the Lost Kingdoms expansion), where you will compete with your opponents to lead your prestigious civilization through the ages.
The game starts at the Classic era (antiquity). Through the ages, you will have to assemble your military forces to conquer new territories, focus on scientific research to enhance your civilization’s abilities, build breathtaking wonders to harness their unique advantages, and develop your cultural policies to guide your people to victory.
Each civilization has its own deck of cards, each with its own cultural specificities, as well as an army to explore and conquer the provinces on the board. Each turn, you’ll be able to draw and activate cards, combining their effects to develop your civilization and conquer the world. But you’re not alone in this race, as your opponents will try and outrun you as quickly as they can. A game of Monumental is played over different eras, each of them featuring new cards to acquire and use.
At the very beginning of the game, you control a small remote city whose name gets lost in the wind. Yet by the end of the game, thanks to the many cards that you will acquire, all will admire your monumental city, the jewel of a glorious nation!
As war is often inevitable, you’ll need to lead your troops to combat when necessary. Fight barbarians or protohistoric Free Cities to loot their resources, then wage war against your opponents! Each civilization comes with its finely sculpted set of units for you to deploy on a richly illustrated modular game board and to take control of the world.
About the game
- GAME TIME 60 - 120 MINS
- NUMBER OF PLAYERS FOR 1 TO 4 PLAYERS
- RECOMENDED AGE 10 YEARS AND +

Deck building and cross-tapping are the basis of what makes Monumental a fun, innovative and infinitely replayable game!
In Monumental, the main gaming mechanic is called CROSS-TAPPING. To activate your cards, you must pick a line and a column in your city, and activate (tap) cards from this line and column (5 cards out of 9). You may pick any line and any column.
This innovative mechanic introduces a whole new way of planning and using the cards of your deck from turn to turn as optimization and combos are at the heart of the game.
Before the first turn, randomly draw 9 cards from your deck (out of 14 at the beginning of the game) and place them on the table in a square of 3x3 cards: this is your city. Over the course of the game, your city will evolve. You’ll start with basic buildings with limited interaction, but by the end of the game, your city will be full of advanced buildings, breathtaking wonders, and immense Knowledge.

Nostalgia for Sid Meier's Civilizations

- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2024This game has a very specific niche. The target audience are board gamers who grew up playing Sid Meier's Civilization, specifically late 90s early 2000s between Civ 2 and Civ 4. At its heart, it's a relatively light deck builder. The designer has made many little tweaks to the gameplay to give you that nostalgia of playing Civ, from the faction leaders and policies, technology and wonder names, the way the cards are laid out in a 3x3 grid, to the eras and scoring conditions at the end of game. It is meticulously designed remind me what it was like playing Civ series until 5am in the morning just getting that one extra tech, one extra policy.
Many people complained about the late game downtime of the game. Even that is completely accurate! The atrocious downtime is completely representative of how late game in Civilization just breaks down and non functional.
I would not recommend this game for everyone. There is too much rule overhead, weird pacing, and thematic dissonance for the general audience. I suspect, for many people, they will be either be disappointed in how light it is once they learn it, or find it too much of a hassle for such a light game.
If you have any Civ buddies that just happens to be into board games, this will be great fun and hit you with nostalgia even more than proper Civ board games. Complex Civ board games just make me want to replay the video game instead. This one is a thematic game disguised as a deckbuilding Civ game.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2024We were surprised with the quality of the components. No flimsy pieces in this game. Box also has a tray for storing pieces, which is nice. Punch boards were easy to punch out. Would purchase again from this company.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2024The production quality of the game does not live up to the price they're charging. I've played many other games of similar quality for half the price. No miniatures or anything, so a $70+ price tag seems outrageous for just cardboard and not that many cards. Wait for this to drop well below $40.
Gameplay is ok, however a bit dry and convoluted. The new expansion seems to make things even worse, but I haven't played that yet. Already seeing it drop to almost 50% of it's original price, makes me wary of even trying it out - but I didn't like the base game enough to warrant the expansion purchase anyway.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2024Half the price of the game store.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2024everyone love this in the family, kids and us play together.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2024Great price on a fun game. But I originally thought this came with minifigures, but it is the cheaper version that does not.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2024The product page changed and it is no longer saying it’s a one player game, the box says it’s a one player game. I do not like companies that lie like this

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2024My family was looking forward to learning this game. Unfortunately, right out of the box the game was missing several pieces needed to play it. Two civilizations were missing culture cards, and there were several other "setup" game cards missing. I'd pass on this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente juego
Mezcla un tanto de control de área con deck building. Un muy buen juego con bastante interacción entre jugadores.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a new copy
Received a clearly used and opened copy with all the components strewn around and many components in partially open baggies. Not shrinkwrapped
