From the brand

From the manufacturer

The heir of Dragonholt has died and all signs point to foul play. Now, it’s up to you assemble a team of heroes and investigate the death, before evil political rivals take the throne.

Legacy of Dragonholt is a cooperative narrative game featuring six quests based in the Runebound universe. As many as six daring heroes may join in the adventure.

Your choices will build your adventure as you plunge into dark caves and dangerous forests. You face off against a number of enemies, including cunning bandits and vicious monsters, all in the pursuit of foiling the plot of an evil overlord.

Design your own hero to go on an epic adventure. Choose your race and class, develop your own personal backstory, and select the skills you think you’ll need on your quest.

Legacy of Dragonholt uses the Oracle System. This allows you to play an immersive, narrative, RPG-style game, without the need for a game master.

As the game progresses, your character earns experience which manifests in increased stamina, new skills, and even newfound fame. In time, you can face the ultimate enemy.

Immersive CYOA, left me wanting more Terrinoth
I finally made the time to finish up the last part of "Legacy of Dragonholt" - Paper Faces. And despite being a pleasant Hyrrinx (catperson) Wildlander that helped everyone along the way, I somehow got what I think was the darkest ending. I totally didn't see that coming and was mouth-drop-shocked. Despite my strong desire to press the rewind button, I'm going to use it the backstory for either a solo excursion or running a game of Realms of Terrinoth. Maybe both... Crazy. But awesome! Highly recommended at sale prices ($24-36), MSRP is a bit steep - but if you are hungry for Terrinoth - go for it!

This will be short and sweet. I play Legacy of Dragonholt SOLO.

I am a fan of the Runebound world. I own the Rundbound boardgame and I run a Realms of Terrinoth RPG campaign (Genesys).

Today I received delivery of my purchase of Legacy of Dragonholt and I got right into it by spending the last 2 hours (my pace) playing through the intro scenario(Where you learn to play the game as you play!) and a little of "Dragonholt Villege". I enjoyed myself so much I had to share my experience with this great game.

My thoughts about Legacy of Dragonholt. The components, difficulty, and funability.

If you enjoy reading and games (like Table top RPGs) Legacy of Dragonholt is for you. The presentation and quality of components are top notch (as with all FFG products). The game is very easy to learn and get right into. You can be playing this game is 5 minutes.

The story and characters are engaging and the choices you have to make have you quickly turning the pages to see what happens! You read a passage and then you are given choices (numbered passages) to either choose a direction , OR depending on where you are in the story, the game tells you what passage to go to. The choices you make WILL affect who you encounter, what you discover, and where you go. There are item cards representing quest items and also things like healing potions. Always good to have healing potions.

BTW there is MUCH to play here. Hours and hours - at your pace. Play as long as you like and then, with a very little bookkeeping, note your place in the game and come back to it later. Nice.

I found LoD to be casual AND challenging. It's like reading a novel but YOU get to direct the story. If you like to read and play RPGs GET legacy of Dragonholt.

I'm having a great time with Legacy of Dragonholt but this is my opinion and your experience may be different. ......nahhh, you'll love this!!

      PEACE and Happy Gaming!

We (myself, wife, and teenage daughter) LOVED this game.

It had an engaging story and characters, and actions had real consequences to the story.

The game mechanics are simple enough to learn, and most of the game is played like a choose your own adventure book, with limited RPG elements (i.e., you get to decide what your character is good at, and it actually affects what happens in the game).

My daughter and I play fairly complicated board games (e.g., Gloomhaven), but my wife has never been able to stay engaged with anything that complicated. But she LOVED this game.

I wish there were more like it.

FWIW, we got the best possible ending (we think) the first time, but we definitely missed a lot of story arcs (because there are time elements, and we just didn't get the timing + location right to unlock some of the side stories). If we hadn't got the best ending, we definitely would play it again till we did.

Legacy of Dragonholt is more or less an attempt to combine an Dungeons-and-Dragons style role-playing game with a tabletop game, and take away the need for one player to be the Dungeonmaster. The result is a cooperative (or solo) experience that is very much an immersive story.

      Pros:
      1. Build your own character - you decide your character's race (human, elf, gnome, orc, catfolk, etc) and then create the character from the ground up. You write the character's description, background, interests, motivations, personality traits - whatever you want to include. And, you can have your character make choices that are "in character" for the material you wrote. You also choose your character's skills and abilities, which will play an important role in the game.

      2. Immersive world - the game world has a cohesive feel, and there's a lot of backstory available to be discovered along the journey. The writers did an excellent job of world-building.

      3. well thought-out cooperative mode. Each player has an activation token. When you make a decision for the group, you flip your token to its deactivated side. You can't make another decision until everyone else in the party has flipped their tokens. When the final player token is flipped, all are reactivated. This helps keep one "alpha" gamer from making all the decisions. It also makes each decision important, because only the skills of the character making the decision may be used. So, if only one of your characters has the "Persuasion" skill and that character has already made a decision, you can't use Persuasion while making the next decision.

      4. Lots of (at least seemingly) meaningful decisions - your party will make hundreds of decisions over the course of the entire campaign. And the campaign appears to be fairly lengthy. We have played roughly 4 hours or so and I would guess we have 20-30 hours to go (minimum) to finish the campaign. (Disclaimer: I'm playing with my kids, so we're not speed-reading. your mileage may vary).

      Cons:

      1. Limited replayability - you MIGHT be able to go through the campaign twice if you enjoy seeing how making different decisions would affect the story, but that's about it. It's basically a play-it-once-and-sell-it game.

      2. More activity than game - where the game differs from a true RPG - your characters don't have stats, and you don't roll dice in combat or while making decisions. There's no "critical fail" when trying to con the blacksmith out of a sword, to make a random example. You make a decision, flip to the appropriate paragraph, and see what happens. That's not to say the decisions aren't meaningful. Just that making decisions is the extent of the game.

So, if you're a fan of interactive stories, and if you really enjoy getting together with friends to laugh and have an adventure, chances are you'll love this game. It's already one of my youngest son's all-time favorite games, and we haven't finished the campaign yet. If you're the type to get frustrated by lack of rolling dice and leaping into battle, you might be disappointed. Overall, we're really enjoying it. I do wish there was more openness, so you could keep playing once you finished the campaign. But as a consolation, the quality of the components is such that you shouldn't have any problem selling or trading it once you finish, so long as you make copies of the tracking sheets instead of writing in the books.
