- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2020Bad Maps is a 3-5 player game that brings a solid amount of fun, strategy, theme, and tiniest bit of messing with your opponents to the table. This is a wonderful game and one that I have found myself regularly taking to the table to play lately. It has an amazing mixture of luck and planning that is both enjoyable and at times frustrating in the best possible way. A great programming game, Bad Maps, is sure to please most players who are new to this game mechanic, love a pirate theme, or are just looking for some good fun.
In the game players will control one of 5 ship captains piecing together parts of a treasure map and giving orders to the scallywags and deckhands out on the beach as to where they should dig to find buried treasure. “X” of course marks the spot and you’ll be competing against the other captains in giving out orders, while you may tell the red minion to face North and then move 3 spaces, another captain may see it fit to thwart your plans by having that minion turn back South and move back in the same direction. The minion characters on the beach will obey the commands of any captain so long as they are played in order around the board in spaces market 1-5. You’ll all be issuing commands to try and achieve hidden objective cards you control, examples might be that the red minion is closest to the treasure, or that the yellow minion is last place or furthest away. In trying to complete your objectives each round you may be counteracting the commands issued by other captains who have the opposite objectives.
Once the program is complete and all minions around the board have their 5 commands they carry them out starting with the first and proceeding around the board, then moving to the second and so on. Once all the hidden commands have been played objectives are scored based on proximity to the center square. That ends the first round, the minions will dig holes where they are which serve as barriers for round 2 and everyone starts over with new objectives and begins issuing orders once again.
This is the basic setup of the game, taking turns playing cards and mapping out the path each minion will take in hopes you will score your objective cards. There are some advanced variants that can be added once you are familiar with the game. The captains have special powers on the reverse side of their player boards. In the basic game they are only allowed the chance to view another face down card, but each have their own unique powers later. You can also play on the reverse side of the game board and add random placement of minions as another advanced play scenario.
This is a real winner of a game, and plays well at all the listed player counts. I was especially fond of and have to rave about how well the 2 player variant works. It is flawless and makes for a great 2 player couples game, and since adding more players doesn’t actually change the number of moves the minions make Bad Maps continues to excel at the higher player counts. Play time is also accurately listed on the box and provides a great game that can be enjoyed in around 30 minutes. Set sail on your own adventure and have fun digging for treasure of your own.
