My my, now this is an interesting game. I play heavy board games weekly, the likes of Food Chain Magnate, Arkwright, Agricola, 18xx, but this one completely melted my brain. It's fundamentally not very complicated: like many 'euros' you are collecting various resources in a variety of ways in order to build engines that will ultimately score you points. Unlike many of these other games, however, Trismegistus will have you staring at the board going "I really don't know what I'm doing here". It's pretty tough.

A bit like Grand Austria Hotel and other dice drafting games that have preceded it, you draft dice from a bunch of common pools. In Trismegistus, though, there are so many things to consider: the pool you draft from, number of the dice in that pool, the colour of the die and the symbol on the die are all relevant and affect what you will be able to do on your turns. You see, once you have chosen a die from those available, you have to spend that die before you can pick another. So picking a particular die will limit your choices for that round, and all too often you'll find the die you want is in a tiny pool, leading to thoughts like, "Do I take that black die in a bowl of five, giving it a power of five but leaving me only with the black options that I don't want to do...or do I take the red die I really need but in a pool of just two, meaning it'll get used up really quickly". It's agonising.

Then, at the beginning of the game it seems the actions you can do are microscopic. Except you soon discover that everything combos together. So soon you'll find yourself doing an action, realising that you can use the produce from that action to do even more stuff. Then factor in the ability to take small 'follow' actions on other players' turns and you have laid in front of you this vast decisionscape where nothing can be truly weighed up.

Like I said already, I play a lot of heavy euro games but this one is crazy (in a good way). I felt ever so stupid sat there before my first game, and it took a good while before I gained any sense of confidence in what I was doing. The closest experiences I can think of have been Lisboa and Madeira, as these two also seem to tax my brain.

So if you like games with a complicated decision space this will be right up your alley. There's not a huge amount of player interaction (mainly taking the dice you think your opponent will need), but it's a fun one to play and looks great on the table.
